Therapeutic G-tube placement is significantly associated with severe mucositis as demonstrated in several studies:
- Feeding-tube placement or use of total parenteral nutrition was required in 34% of head and neck cancer patients with moderate or severe mucositis1.
- In patients with grade 3-4 mucositis, 18% of those who received radiation only and 38% of those who received chemoradiation required G-tube placement during RT2.
- 33% of patients with head and neck cancers receiving chemoradiation had feeding-tube placement, compared with only 18% treated with conventional radiation only3.
